A stylist for nearly three decades, American beauty entrepreneur Maya Smith is the co-founder, CEO, and creative director of The Doux — a salon-grade haircare brand she started while living in Germany.

Smith and her husband were running their own salon there when she noticed something missing: products that gave textured hair professional-quality results without a complex routine. So, she set out to create them. That was 2008, and The Doux has been redefining textured haircare ever since.

You’ve probably spotted the bold, music-inspired packaging on shelves at Target, CVS, or Boots. But it’s what’s inside that’s earned the brand its cult following. The formulas are high-performance, the approach is refreshingly no-nonsense, and there’s a hero product to back it all up — the Mousse Def Texture Foam. If you know, you know.

And she’s still behind the chair, which means every formula comes from real experience with curls, coils, waves, and silk presses.

We recently caught up with Smith to talk about building The Doux, the product that represents the brand best, and why technique deserves way more attention in haircare.

What inspired you to create The Doux?

The Doux was born behind the chair. After 30 years as a licensed cosmetologist, I saw clients overwhelmed by complicated routines and products that didn’t perform the way professional products did in the salon. I created The Doux to simplify textured hair care without compromising performance. I grew up on hip-hop, worked in Black salons, and spent plenty of time in beauty supply stores. The Doux is where all of that meets professional hair care.

What product makes the best introduction to the brand?

Mousse Def Texture Foam, hands down. It represents our philosophy: fewer products, professional performance, great results. It defines, conditions, adds shine, and provides hold without requiring a cocktail of products underneath it. We helped reintroduce mousse to a generation of curly and coily consumers who thought foam wasn’t for their hair. If you want to understand The Doux, start with Mousse Def.

What has been the biggest highlight?

Watching something that started behind my salon chair become a multimillion-dollar brand sold by major retailers has been incredible. But the biggest highlight is still hearing from hairstylists who use The Doux behind the chair and consumers who say we’ve changed their relationship with their hair. Retail growth is exciting, but impact is the receipt.

What advice would you give to those wanting to launch their own beauty brand?

Solve a real problem. “I want a beauty brand” isn’t a business strategy. Know who you’re serving, what problem you’re solving, and why your solution deserves to exist. Build something people genuinely want to repurchase. Understand your margins, protect your cash, and learn your supply chain. Cool branding may get someone to pick your product up once. Performance is what makes them buy it again.

What’s next for The Doux?

More innovation, more education, and deeper investment in the professional stylist community. The Doux was made in the salon, and as we grow, I never want us to lose our connection to the chair. We’re developing new products and categories around how people actually style and care for textured hair, with professional performance and simplicity at the centre. I can’t share everything yet, but we have some really exciting things coming.

What does your daily beauty routine look like?

I’m actually pretty low-maintenance. With hair, I believe styling day should do the heavy lifting. If I’ve done it correctly, I’m not manipulating my hair every morning. I protect it at night and refresh only when necessary. My skincare philosophy is similar: cleanse, treat, hydrate, and protect. I run a company. If my morning beauty routine takes 45 minutes, chances are I’m not doing it.

What are three beauty products you can’t live without?

Mousse Def Texture Foam from The Doux, Danessa Myricks Beauty 10/10 Barrier Boost HA + Ectoin Plumping Serum, and LYS Beauty Speak Love Lip-Plumping Glossy Lip Balm.

I’m pretty loyal once a product earns a place in my routine. I want products that perform consistently and don’t require me to work harder than they do.

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve been given?

Do it every day. The more consistently you engage in your hair and beauty routine, the better you get at it. The better you get, the less time it takes, and the easier it becomes to stay consistent. Fancy products are one thing, but the results most people are looking for come from consistency. That’s the part money can’t buy.

What person or brand would you love to collaborate with?

Tyler, the Creator. I love the way he builds worlds. Music, fashion, design, color, humor — nothing feels separated, and nothing feels like it was created by committee. There’s a very clear point of view behind everything he touches. That resonates with me because I’ve always seen The Doux as more than hair products. It’s culture, music, beauty, and design all speaking the same language. I think we could make something really unexpected and incredibly dope.

What’s not getting the attention it deserves in the beauty industry right now?

The science of styling. We talk constantly about ingredients, porosity, moisture, and hair health, but not enough about how water, dilution, tension, heat, product distribution, and drying affect a formula’s performance. Sometimes consumers don’t need another product; they need better technique. There’s an enormous amount of technical knowledge living behind the salon chair that the beauty industry has yet to fully tap into.

The Doux is available at Boots and Amazon in the UK, and at Target and Walmart in the US. For more exclusive conversations with beauty founders, explore our beauty interviews archive.
