The Rosacea Routine That Got Me Through an NYC Heatwave
New York City in the summer is a vibe. Throw in a heatwave, though, and the vibes can get… irritated. Everyone talks about how harsh winter can be on your skin. While that’s certainly true, for those of us with rosacea, summer can be even worse. Heat, humidity, sweat, blasting A/C, and UV exposure are practically a perfect storm for triggering rosacea flare-ups.
Instead of spending another summer trying to fix flare-ups after they happened, I wanted to build a routine that kept my skin calm, hydrated, and protected from the start. The recent extreme heat in NYC was the ultimate test, and I have to say, I think I’ve found my heatwave skincare toolkit.
Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray
This hypochlorous spray has been a staple in my yoga bag for years, but this summer, it got promoted to my purse. I always reach for it after workouts or whenever I’m especially sweaty, but lately I’ve also been incorporating it into my morning and nighttime routine right after cleansing and before my serums. My skin just feels calmer when I use it consistently.
Hypochlorous acid has become one of skincare’s biggest buzz ingredients over the past few years, but Tower 28 has been championing it since 2019. The reason it works so well for irritated skin is because our bodies naturally produce hypochlorous acid as part of our immune response. It’s both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, while the water and sodium chloride in the formula are an ideal delivery system to soothe skin without drying it out.
Violette_FR Boum-Boum Milk
You may be more familiar with Violette_FR’s gorgeous makeup products, but don’t sleep on their skincare! I like to use the Boum-Boum Milk in the morning as a glowy first step in my routine, but I’ve also found myself reaching for it throughout the day when my skin starts feeling tight, overheated, or generally unhappy.
This has quickly become one of my favourite summer skincare discoveries because the texture is exactly what my sensitive skin wants when the NYC humidity hits 90%. The super-fine mist instantly gives a soothing, refreshed sensation to my skin without ever feeling like it’s just sitting on my face. Plus, the probiotic-based formula acts as a toner, serum, and moisturiser all in one, which means you can fit a lot of skincare support into one simple step. With consistent use, I’ve noticed my skin feels more balanced and less reactive overall.
Colorescience Barrier Pro Serum Spray
I’ve actually been in love with this spray since it launched in 2025, and I’m already on my third bottle. I use this in both my morning and nighttime routine and also throughout the day when I feel my skin could use a little extra love.
Vitamin D plays a key role in barrier defence, repair, and calming inflammation, but it’s usually something we associate with sun exposure (which we’re often trying to limit), oils (which can be unstable as a standalone ingredient), or oral supplements. The challenge with supplements is that while they support the body systemically, they don’t specifically deliver vitamin D to the skin, where it can help support barrier function. Colorescience created this serum-mist formula to support the skin’s natural vitamin D process without relying on UV exposure or the instability of topical oils.
When the NYC heatwave finally hit, I noticed my skin was much less reactive than it had been during previous heatwaves. Instead of feeling like it was always one trigger away from a flare-up, my skin felt stronger and more resilient, which, for rosacea-prone skin, is a pretty big win.
Haruharu Wonder Probiotics Barrier Essence
I’ll be honest, I never really understood the difference between an essence and a toner until a few months ago, when I was introduced to Haruharu Wonder’s Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence. While toners typically help balance the skin’s pH, essences like this one are designed to hydrate and prep the skin for the products that follow. I like to use this before applying hyaluronic acid in the morning and at night, as it helps add an extra layer of hydration while allowing the rest of my routine to sink in more effectively.
The reason this is such a great fit for rosacea-prone skin is that it’s packed with nutrient-rich ferments, essential lipid components, ceramides, and fatty acids that support the skin barrier. The star ingredient, fermented black rice, is an antioxidant powerhouse that helps protect against free radicals while supporting smoother, healthier-looking skin over time.
After using this regularly, I’ve noticed my skin feels softer and smoother — all while getting those daily antioxidant and barrier-supporting benefits.
Ultra Violette Future Fluid SPF 50
UV exposure can be a trigger for many people with sensitive skin, but the challenge is finding an SPF that doesn’t pill, feel heavy, worsen redness, or leave you wanting to wash your face five minutes after applying it. I’m always on the hunt for a daily mineral sunscreen that feels more like skincare than a chore. The last thing I want is to spend ten minutes aggressively rubbing sunscreen into my face.
The Future Fluid from Ultra Violette has been an incredible find for a few reasons. First, it’s SPF 50 (I never put anything lower than SPF 50 on my face). The formula also includes skin-loving ingredients like antioxidant-rich vitamin E, Japanese zinc, a lightweight mineral UV filter, and squalane, which helps prevent moisture loss and keeps sensitised skin feeling comfortable.
But honestly, the biggest selling point for me is the texture. This is probably the thinnest sunscreen formula I’ve ever used, and when I’m already dealing with heat, sweat, and humidity, that’s exactly what my skin needs. It protects me without making me feel like I’m wearing another layer of skincare, which is ultimately what keeps me reapplying.
Dr. Althea StretchFit Calming Pad
Listen, sometimes you need a nice cold glass of rosé in the middle of a heatwave. Unfortunately, alcohol is one of my biggest rosacea triggers, even when I’ve done all the right things with my skincare routine. So, when my cheeks are feeling hot and flushed, I’m looking for immediate cooling relief. Enter Dr. Althea.
While the 365 Relief Cream may be the K-beauty brand’s bestseller, I’ve been loving the Cooling Stretch Facial Pads for those moments when my skin needs a quick reset. The cica complex helps soothe the feeling of heat on my cheeks, while the leftover serum continues to provide hydration even after the irritation starts to settle. They’re basically my skincare version of an ice pack, but much more pleasant to use.
Having now spent six years dealing with rosacea, I’ve learned that it isn’t something I can cure. And with NYC summers certainly not getting any cooler, sticking to a routine that focuses on prevention instead of panic has made a huge difference. My skin still flushes from time to time, but now I have products I actually trust to help it recover, especially when NYC turns into a heat-domed sauna.
