Shu Uemura Is Finally Back in the UK
After years of quiet mourning, costly import charges, and long-haul suitcase stockpiling, Shu Uemura is finally back in the UK. The legendary Japanese beauty brand, best known for its beloved lash curler and cleansing oils, is once again available to British shoppers, this time via Amazon.
“We are thrilled to announce that Shu Uemura’s world-famous cleansing oils are finally back in the UK,” says Caroline Sisombat, Head of Marketing at L’Oréal International Distribution Europe. “Their long history and iconic performance, adored by makeup artists worldwide, left many loyal users saddened when the brand withdrew from the European market a decade ago. But the wait is over. Imported directly from Japan, they are now available to a wider audience.”
Back in 2017, L’Oréal confirmed the brand’s withdrawal from the UK as part of a wider global efficiency strategy. The company chose to prioritise newer brands within its Luxury Division and refocus its portfolio geographically, particularly towards Asia. The exit didn’t signal declining relevance: products were still available through select international e-commerce routes, but it did leave a noticeable gap on British beauty shelves.
Fast-forward to now, and the brand’s return has been shaped directly by sustained consumer appetite.
The man behind the brand, Mr Shu Uemura, wasn’t just a founder — he was what we’d recognise today as a disruptor. Born in Tokyo in 1928, he became the first Japanese makeup artist to break into Hollywood. But his greatest accomplishment? Changing how we think about our routines by championing the idea that cleansing is both the first and last step of makeup.
His skin-first philosophy — the idea that beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin — is exactly why the brand has maintained its cult status for decades. That, and its commitment to professional-grade artistry, sensorial textures, and signature Japanese research-driven innovation.
Leading the relaunch is Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil, the brand’s all-in-one cleansing hero and a global bestseller, with one bottle sold every six seconds.
At the centre of the formula is cold-pressed tsubaki oil sourced from Toshima Island in Japan, chosen for its compatibility with the skin barrier and naturally high oleic acid content. With a 94% serum-in-oil composition, Ultime8 is designed to cleanse, nourish, and prime in a single step — no double cleanse required.
Positioned as what the brand calls “prep step 0”, it removes makeup, residue, and impurities while preparing the skin to better absorb the skincare that follows. Its formula uses nano-micellar cleansing technology to lift makeup, dirt, and other impurities gently, paired with a skin-affinity activator inspired by natural lipids that can increase the absorption of subsequent skincare ingredients by up to 2.2 times.
Alongside cleansing, the brand’s iconic eyelash curler returns as a reminder of its makeup artistry roots.
