Cottonball Launches With Personalised Tretinoin Skincare

Prescription skincare has always had a reputation for being a bit of a faff. There are doctor’s appointments, pharmacy trips, and formulas that don’t always slot neatly into the beauty routine you already know and love. But new brand Cottonball wants to change that with personalised prescription treatments that combine high-strength actives with the kind of ingredients you’re used to seeing in your skincare.

Launching today, Cottonball works through a telemedicine model, meaning you can complete the entire process from home. You start with an online consultation covering your skin concerns, goals, current products, skin tone, and sensitivity. A licensed clinician then reviews your answers within 24 hours and prescribes a personalised treatment, which is custom-blended by Cottonball’s pharmacy and dispatched within two days.

The support doesn’t stop when your formula turns up, either. Through Cottonball’s online portal, you can track your progress, find out exactly where your prescription fits into your existing routine, and message your dermatology care team with any questions. Your formula can also be adjusted at no additional cost if it isn’t quite working for your skin.

The Experts Behind the Formulas

We knew Cottonball’s formulas were worth paying attention to when we found out its Chief Cosmetic Chemist Advisor is Ron Robinson — the founder and CEO of BeautyStat. Robinson has previously created products for the likes of Clinique, Yes Day, La Mer, Lancôme, and Rhode, so he knows his way around a skincare formula.

“Cottonball delivers clinically effective and personalized prescription skincare directly to consumers, with formulas that also contain the best cosmetic ingredients,” says Robinson. “Cottonball is solving a big gap in the Rx skincare market.”

Robinson helped develop Cottonball’s treatments and a delivery system that allows prescription and over-the-counter ingredients to sit within the same formula. Each treatment also uses the brand’s signature base, made with a sterol, linoleic acid, a vegan ceramide, and petrolatum. According to Cottonball, it was developed to support the skin barrier and help reduce potential irritation from stronger actives.

Dermatologist Dr Mona Gohara, a clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, also worked with the brand on its approach to personalisation.

How to Build Your Tretinoin Tolerance

Dryness, redness, flaking, and temporary breakouts can all happen while your skin adjusts. Cottonball recommends starting with a pea-sized amount on clean, completely dry skin once or twice a week, then gradually increasing how often you use it according to your skin’s tolerance. The brand says these initial effects generally settle within four to eight weeks.

And yes, your daily SPF becomes even more important. The brand advises applying broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning because tretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

The launch collection includes seven treatments that cover wrinkles, pigmentation, hormonal skin changes, and the frequently forgotten neck and under-eye areas. The products provide a starting point, but the final prescription is tailored to you, so its exact combination of ingredients may vary.

• VX.1 Advanced Anti-Aging & Repair Complex: This is the one for anyone who wants a bit of everything. The most comprehensive treatment in the collection combines tretinoin, bakuchiol, rapamycin, and dual-weight hyaluronic acid. Depending on your pigmentation concerns, niacinamide, azelaic acid, or tranexamic acid may be added, too.
• VX.2 Wrinkle-Smoothing & Prevention Complex: Cottonball’s highest-strength tretinoin treatment pairs the prescription retinoid with Matrixyl 3000, niacinamide, dexpanthenol, and dual-weight hyaluronic acid. Tranexamic acid and azelaic acid can also be included where needed.
• VX.3 Hormone Renewal Complex: Created for skin affected by falling oestrogen levels, this formula contains 0.3% bioidentical estriol alongside vitamin C, resveratrol, Matrixyl 3000, and dual-weight hyaluronic acid. If hormonal breakouts are part of the picture, azelaic acid may be added.
• VX.4 Daily Skin-Brightening Formula: If pigmentation is your main concern, this treatment brings together tretinoin, tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin, kojic acid, niacinamide, azelaic acid, and dual-weight hyaluronic acid.
