Jennifer Lawrence Is Joining the Celebrity Haircare Club
Jennifer Lawrence has worn just about every hairstyle going on screen, so you’d expect her to have picked up a tip or two about washing, treating, and styling along the way. Turns out she has, and now she’s bottling it.
The Oscar winner has teamed up with Boston biotech company Arcaea on Mes°, a new beauty brand arriving on 27 October. She joins several other celebrities who have got in on the haircare game, from Beyoncé with Cécred and Jennifer Aniston with LolaVie to Cardi B with Grow-Good Beauty and Blake Lively with Blake Brown.
Lawrence teased Mes° on 16 October with an Instagram carousel of hairstyles from her illustrious film career, including sleek updos, blonde bangs, red hair, and some messy texture. Around the same time, a link to the website popped up in her bio. The 36-year-old only joined Instagram in September, opening with a video in which she joked she’d quit the moment anyone said anything negative. So far, she’s stuck around (and we suspect this launch has everything to do with it).
For now, details are seriously thin. All the Mes° site seems to give us is mood. But, if we’re honest, we’re suckers for good branding, and we like what we see. As for what is there, you’ll find a sign-up form inviting you to ‘Get Curious’ and a strapline that reads “Designed by Jennifer Lawrence. Engineered by Arcaea.” The site also describes the brand as “Biodesigned Haircare”, with “A new perspective on beauty” sitting next to the launch date. Consider us intrigued.
So who’s Arcaea? The company was founded by Jasmina Aganovic, an MIT-trained chemical engineer, and it spun out of synthetic biology firm Ginkgo Bioworks. It grows beauty ingredients using fermentation and biological engineering. It’s got some heavyweight backers, too — Chanel and Olaplex were among the investors in a $78m funding round in 2021. Future Society, its first brand, debuted in 2023 with perfumes inspired by the DNA of extinct flowers. Yes, really.
Mes° hasn’t revealed any products, prices, or retailers yet, and what’s going into the formulas is still under wraps. When Arcaea’s funding round was announced, the company listed proteins that can memorise hairstyles among the ideas it was working on. Could that turn up in a Mes° bottle? We’ll find out next week.
Mes° launches on 27 October at mesbeauty.com.
